2018 Walk for Arthritis raises over $1 million
Thousands of Canadians get moving to help fund a cure for arthritis
TORONTO, ON - June 4, 2018 – Canadians in over 40 communities took part in the 9th annual Walk for Arthritis this past weekend, with over 8000 people coming together in a show of support for the over 6 million people who are living with arthritis.
The 2018 Walk for Arthritis raised over $1 million, which has contributed over $11 million during the last nine years to support the work of the Arthritis Society.
“I want to express a heartfelt thank-you to our volunteers, participants, donors, and sponsors,” says Janet Yale, President and CEO of the Arthritis Society. “Every year, we strengthen the arthritis community across Canada. It is inspiring to see so many people coming together in 45 communities to support one another, fundraise, and raise awareness about this disease that affects so many Canadians.”
Arthritis is Canada’s leading chronic health condition, affecting 1 in 5 Canadians. In the next two decades 3 million more people will be diagnosed and face a life of pain and limitation - the reason why Allison Rose of St. John’s, Newfoundland, was participating in her third Walk for Arthritis this year.
“I have memories of my father not being able to walk when he got home from work and having to crawl from our entryway to the living room,” she recalls, “I want to do whatever I can to help find a cure. I don't want to see anyone else go through the things I've seen, or experience the kind of pain my father went through.”
Major advancement in scientific research is urgently needed to find a cure and to provide innovative solutions to greatly improve the quality of life for those living with arthritis. Funds raised by the 2018 Walk for Arthritis will help deliver better health outcomes for people affected by the disease. Donations are still being accepted until June 30th.
The Arthritis Society is grateful to the more than 9,000 donors and countless corporate sponsors, including our Major Sponsors, Redpath, KEEOGO, Massage Addict, Urban Poling, and Panago who made the 2018 Walk for Arthritis a success.
