For the six million people in Canada living with arthritis, activities like going for a walk, catching up with friends or gathering with family can be unimaginable. The pain of the disease can be so debilitating that it prevents people from fully engaging in life’s joys.

Arthritis researchers are driven to find solutions that will help those living with the agony of arthritis. They’re constantly exploring new and better ways to diagnose, treat and prevent this disease, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure.

At Arthritis Society Canada, we value research. We are committed to supporting arthritis researchers throughout their careers, including at the very beginning. With donor support, we have helped to launch the careers of nearly 1,000 research trainees and early-career scientists. One researcher we’ve funded is Dr. Pascal Tétreault.

A researcher at the Université de Sherbrooke, Dr. Pascal Tétreault is focused on relieving back pain triggered by arthritis. Using imaging techniques, his team is studying the brains of patients who will receive a specific treatment. They are hoping to find unique features in the structure and function of the brains of treatment responders, features that are absent in patients who will not respond to the treatment.

This exciting work could be a game-changer, and it could lead to tailored treatments that offer much-needed pain relief to patients.
