There's a special joy that comes from gathering with family and friends over a delicious meal. If you have gout or are at risk of gout however, some indulgences may put you at higher risk of an attack.
Gout, a common form of inflammatory arthritis, is caused by uric acid crystals forming within or around joints. Foods rich in purines should be avoided because purines break down into uric acid.
Help yourself stay healthy by staying away from these foods:
1. Processed meat
2. Red meats and organ meats
3. Shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster and mussels
4. Oily fish, such as herring, sardines and mackerel
5. Any foods, drinks or sauces that contain corn syrup
6. Sugary beverages, such as pop and some juices
7. Excessive alcohol, especially beer and red wine: Drinking any amount and any type of alcohol can trigger gout, so it's wise to stick to a maximum of one drink a day for women and two per day for men.
