Fund-A-Need

The Vancouver Fire Ball will host a thrilling Fund-A-Need opportunity as part of the evening’s programming to support our Thriving at Work with Arthritis Campaign with a total need of $1.2 million funding.

Though it can be invisible, arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability and work limitations in Canada. More than half of the working-age population living with arthritis is out of the workforce, underscoring the need for support around entering, remaining in and re-entering the workforce.

Due to arthritis, adults in Canada who live with the disease report having to change the number of hours they work, the type of work they do and the way they carry out work tasks. Arthritis can have a profound impact on mental health and well-being, affecting overall performance. Some people must quit working altogether.

Further, studies show that arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, can be linked to occupations involving heavy physical labour, lifting, repetitive or sustained stress on the joints, sustained kneeling or squatting, full-body vibration, and possibly some occupations in the firefighting, nursing, construction, mining, agriculture, fisheries, forestry, cleaning and clothing industries. In total, this represents $20 billion in lost productivity, work presenteeism, absenteeism and exiting the workforce.

Despite the monumental strain arthritis places on the workforce, research into this area is lacking, especially in the Canadian context. Arthritis research in general is grossly underfunded, receiving only 2% of available research dollars in Canada.

Your gift will send a powerful message to the 1 in 5 Canadians living with arthritis: that you recognize their struggle and are committed to helping them continue to work and contribute to our economy. All funds raised will go towards innovative research projects, programs, and services that will benefit employers and employees.
