Arthritis Talks: Arthritis and Work

Arthritis can pose significant challenges to working life due to pain and fatigue. But most people with arthritis want to work. At this Arthritis Talks symposium you will learn:

  • Your rights, accommodations employers must make and employment laws
  • The do’s and don’ts of medical cannabis while working  
  • Work/life balance and the pressures of juggling multiple demands when you have arthritis

Register today for the live event or webinar. There will be a question and answer session following each presentation for both in-person and online attendees.

After the presentations, in-person attendees in Kamloops and Victoria can stay to hear a local arthritis professional discuss strategies to make working with arthritis easier.

    We recommend you log in 15 minutes before the broadcast starts in your time zone to check with your computer compatibility. Access to the live webinar will be limited to the first 1,000 attendees. However, all registered participants will receive a recording of the presentations.

Registration for the webinar or viewing events are free. Registration for the live events in Kamloops and Victoria is $10 and is non-refundable. Select your preferred option (in-person or online) during the registration process.
Registration closes September 20, at 9 am PDT.

Please print your ticket confirmation and bring it with you to the live events. Should you encounter any difficulties during the registration process, please email bc-registration@arthritis.ca for help.

If you’ve booked a ticket but can’t attend, we encourage you to pass your ticket along to someone who may benefit from the information.

Our speakers
  • David Turner (employment lawyer)

    David will discuss what accommodations employers must make for people living with arthritis, as well as considerations for people living with arthritis and their employers if they are thinking about using medicinal cannabis while at work.

    David is a partner at EKB, joining in 2006 after articling with the firm. He has a civil litigation practice with a focus on commercial litigation, employment law, and administrative law. David is also a member of the All-in for Arthritis Gala organizing committee in BC.  

  • Dr. Catherine Backman (occupational therapist)

    Catherine will focus her presentation on work/life balance and the pressures of juggling multiple demands. She will also look at practical ergonomics in the workplace depending on your career, and how to make your workstation work for you. 

    Catherine is President of the Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists Board of Directors. She is an occupational therapist, educator and researcher interested in reducing the impact of arthritis on everyday activities. Her research evaluates the outcome of occupational therapy and rehabilitation interventions. Catherine is interested in the psychosocial impact of chronic illness and the strategies people use to live well while living with arthritis. She has published over 150 papers, abstracts and book chapters.

  • Michael Pohlmann (physiotherapist)

    Michael will identify some of the physical challenges and barriers for people working with arthritis, such as stiffness in the hands, using a computer or tools, manual labour and travelling to work via bus or car and will provide practical solutions to help ease arthritis pain and stiffness. Michael’s presentation will also incorporate some of the material that is included in our e-learning modules, such as the section on “YOUR BODY AT WORK” under Strategies.  

    Michael has worked in many areas of treatment and rehabilitation and joined the team at the Mary Pack Arthritis Program in Victoria in 2008. He has a strong focus on compassionate care, aiming to help people understand their arthritis so that they can manage it better. Michael feels privileged to work with every client and with every team member. His aim is to bring together each client's arthritis experience with current practice knowledge to form a solid plan to help the client move forward.

  • Denise Ropp (health & wellness services specialist)

    Denise is the clinic director of DR Health Solutions, which specializes in the assessment, prescribing and education of medical cannabis. She is a retired registered nurse, with more than 35 years’ experience in the health-care industry. She is passionate about helping patients reach their health and wellness goals.

You should bring your ticket to speed up check-in at the event. However, if you forget to bring it with you, you can still check in.
