Eradicating hip dysplasia - NAPS

Creating the healthcare of tomorrow

The NAPS Project, led by Arthritis Society Canada and Dr. Jacob Jaremko, MD, PhD, pediatric musculoskeletal radiologist at the University of Alberta, is trailblazing in the field of Developmental Dysplasia of the Hip diagnosis — detecting it in babies within seconds.

State-of-the-art AI technology, developed by Dr. Jaremko and the Medo AI team (now part of Exo), is embedded in a portable ultrasound that fits in your pocket and can quickly, affordably and accurately detect hip dysplasia.

Exo’s AI in support of Dr. Jaremko’s research functions as a real-life learning lab: the more hip dysplasia screens are completed, the more accurate the tool becomes at diagnosing them. And the imaging is easy to conduct with minimal training. Professionals such as nurses or physicians can perform it with little margin for error.

“The further away you are from the main hospital — either geographically or socio-economically or culturally — the more likely this will help you. It really enhances the equity of care.”

- Dr. Jacob Jaremko, MD, PhD Professor and Canada CIFAR AI Chair, Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry, University of Alberta
