Charging forward with laser focus
Dear donors,
To solve a disease as unrelenting as arthritis, an equally unrelenting dedication is needed. This is what you have shown over the past year, and for that we are deeply grateful.
Thanks to your generosity, Arthritis Society Canada has helped to ensure that vital research, life-changing programs and support services, and crucial advocacy efforts could be carried out. We hope you will enjoy reading about these successes. Not only are these focus areas important for the 6 million people in Canada living with arthritis, but they’re critical for the millions more who could be impacted in the future. It’s estimated that if we don’t confront arthritis, 9 million people in Canada could be affected by 2040.
In partnership with you, we will continue to confront this debilitating disease. Our bold Arthritis Action Plan is at the centre of our priorities, and it involves not only those impacted by arthritis, but everyone in Canada. To transform health outcomes and improve the quality of life for people living with arthritis, we all must understand the urgency. You, valued members of our donor family, can help us raise awareness and effect change.
Thank you again for your support. We know much success is ahead as we continue to work together.
With gratitude,
Jennifer Stewart

Arthritis Society Canada
“On behalf of Lindsay Construction, I was so proud to lend support as the Arthritis Society Canada 2023 Celebrity Roastee. With one in five Canadians affected by the disease, it’s crucial we fund the research, advocacy and services that Arthritis Society Canada provides to improve the lives of those affected by arthritis. Ongoing corporate support and donations like ours will enable advancements in treatments, support programs for patients and their families, and ultimately, a cure.”
- Cory Bell, President & CEO, Lindsay Construction
“Arthritis Society Canada’s work is critical to advancing research and innovation, advocating for policy change, and providing education and support. I am proud to be a member of the National Council and that my organization, Medline Canada, Corporation, shares the same passion and purpose of improving the care of Canadians. We are honoured to stand with Arthritis Society Canada as it continues to find bold and impactful ways to improve the lives of people living with arthritis.”
- Diana Gazdar, Vice Chair, National Council and Vice President, Marketing, Medline Canada, Corporation
“I was in my mid-20s when I was diagnosed with arthritis. I was shocked – I’m young, healthy and active. I’m definitely not a victim, but arthritis impacts every aspect of your life. Axis Insurance and Arthritis Society Canada care about people, and that’s why this partnership is important. I’m truly honoured to be part of the Axis team and their legacy because they’re protecting people, businesses and communities in Vancouver and across the country.”
- Dorothea Dowling, Senior Vice President, National Practice Group Leader - Personal Insurance, Axis Insurance

Returning the favour
Dr. Raymond Lam and Alanna Wong remember their sister, Joyce Lam, as head-strong and resilient. These were traits that served her well as she wrestled with arthritis for most of her life. “She was always a fighter,” says Raymond.
A grateful fighter, one could say. Joyce, who passed away at age 63 in April 2022 after arthritis had caused severe damage to her heart and lungs, left Arthritis Society Canada a gift in her Will to help change the future for people impacted by the disease.
Joyce’s health deteriorated rapidly in her mid-20s due to arthritis. She was admitted to hospital where doctors didn’t think she’d survive, but a clinical trial of a medication gave her a new lease on life. She lived more than 30 years longer than doctors predicted, relying on Arthritis Society Canada’s support. In return, she volunteered.
“Arthritis Society Canada helped [Joyce] to stay independent,” says Alanna. “That’s why she volunteered, and why she wanted the gift she willed to help patients impacted by arthritis access the much-needed support they might not be able to afford themselves.”
In 2004, Arthritis Society Canada helped to start a fund in Joyce’s name. It supports programs and services meant to reduce pain and disability for people living with arthritis. Joyce planned for her estate gift to go into the fund, ensuring Arthritis Society Canada would receive income installments when she passed.
“Joyce was incredibly special,” says Liesl Drayton, National Director, Planned Giving, Arthritis Society Canada. “This very generous gift will help to ensure her legacy lives on.”
Compelled to contribute
Senthooran Punithavel vividly recalls learning that his longtime friend’s young daughter nearly lost her life due to arthritis complications. The Financial Advisor at the Co-operators was chatting with Dina Chan, a friend from high school, about the challenges her teenage daughter Jayna had faced for a decade. Jayna was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood arthritis at age 3, and after several setbacks, underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2020. The procedure saved her life, but Senthooran was stunned to learn of the ordeal and began imagining his own children in a similar situation.
“I have kids the same age as Jayna. It really affected me. What if it had been my child? I knew something needed to be done,” Senthooran says.
He followed through.
In May 2024, the Co-operators were the Presenting Sponsor of Fashion on Fire, an awareness-building event in Toronto. It was an apt partnership aligned to the Co‑operators’ giving strategy.
“The Co-operators stands for helping people overcome adversity,” Senthooran says. “Getting involved was a natural fit, especially because arthritis isn’t in the spotlight the way many other diseases are.”
Senthooran adds that several people in his life, including family members, live with the challenges of arthritis. Due to the misconception that it’s a mild, age-related condition, however, he says people often suffer in silence. He wants to right that wrong.
“Arthritis isn’t something people have to live through. We need to find manageable solutions and a cure,” he says. “It’ll help future children from having to suffer the way Jayna suffered, and I’m happy to be part of that work in any way I can.”
“I had several episodes of psoriatic arthritis
in my youth. Advances in research have
meant that we can now benefit from drugs
that are more effective than what was
previously used. It is therefore a pleasure
for me to contribute to research through
donations that I have been making to
Arthritis Society Canada for several years.”
