The Arthritis Society has long-standing relationships with the Rheumatology divisions across Canada and was originally involved in advocating for their formation. This funding opportunity recognizes the critical role of the divisions in improving the lives of those living with arthritis and the importance of the Arthritis Society’s collaboration to engage and support people living with arthritis.

This funding opportunity aligns with one of the Arthritis Society’s primary areas of focus to build and support a pipeline of strong researchers:

  • Proposal objectives must support capacity building programs, activities and/or related events (i.e. training days, scientific conferences, etc.) with an aim to increase the number of academic rheumatologists in Canada and/or to support research training in rheumatology.
  • Applicants will be required to clearly articulate how their application fits this funding mechanism. Applicants that fail to meet the requirement will not be considered for funding.


Applications must be submitted by the Rheumatology Division Director of an academic department of medicine. The Arthritis Society will however also consider a submission by a rheumatologist who is not the Division Director. In such circumstances, the submission must include a letter of support by the Division Director indicating his/her endorsement of the submission in lieu of a submission from himself/herself.

The roles and responsibilities of Principal Investigators, Co-Principal Investigator (co-PIs) and Collaborators, and the definition of an eligible institution to receive and manage the Arthritis Society’s research and training funds are found on the Arthritis Society’s website.

Award Amount and Term

Our research funding is always contingent on the generosity of our donors, and while the financial implications of the current pandemic have yet to be fully appreciated, we anticipate it will influence our available research funding envelope.

Pending available funds, the Arthritis Society will fund up to 10 awards. The maximum award per proposal is $15,000 for a term of one year. The Arthritis Society will consider applications exceeding this amount should a proposal involve multiple divisions. Maximum funds considered for such a proposal will be $15,000 multiplied by the number of divisions named as partners by the respective Division Directors applying as co-PIs with a maximum value of $150,000. Please note that the Arthritis Society may reduce the requested amounts to eliminate ineligible costs and/or support a maximum number of meritorious proposals.

Note: If successful applicants received funds from a previous competition, funds for a new award will not be made available until the Arthritis Society has received progress and financial reports.

Peer Review

Eligible submissions will be assessed by a peer review panel comprised of medical and scientific experts, along with consumers to provide patient perspectives.


There is a limit of one application per rheumatic health unit.  All submissions will be screened for completeness and eligibility. Note that incomplete applications by the deadline will be deemed ineligible and withdrawn from the competition. It is the responsibility of the applicant to ensure that applications are complete at the time of submission.

Applications must be submitted through the Arthritis Society’s online application system and include the following components:

  • An indication of the alignment of the proposed work with the Arthritis Society’s objectives (capacity building programs with an aim to increase the number of academic rheumatologists in Canada and/or to support research training in rheumatology through programs, activities and/or related events i.e. training days, scientific conferences, etc.)
  • A description of the proposed activities, including:
    • Objectives (Max. 500 words)
    • Description of activities (Max. 1000 words)
  • Proposed budget and justification (Max. 500 words)


  • Signature page (PI)
  • Timeline and Milestones (1 page diagram / chart)
  • Letter of support from Rheumatology Division Director (only if applicant is not the Rheumatology Division Director)

Review Criteria

The proposal will be scored based on the following criteria:

  • Alignment with the objective(s) of this competition
  • Feasibility of the proposal
  • Targeted impact (local or national), and
  • Demonstrated need for funding

Applicants will be notified of the results by mid-August 2020.

Grantee and Host Institution requirements

Grantees and host institutions who receive Arthritis Society funds are expected to act as ambassadors of our mission and may be called upon to communicate about their research with donors and other stakeholders. Funded divisions are expected to support the Arthritis Society’s efforts to engage the rheumatology community, support the development and dissemination of Arthritis Society tools and resources, and provide expertise to engage people affected by arthritis when called upon (for example, through expert community presentations). We encourage grantees and Host Institutions to reach out to us to discuss opportunities for engagement.
