Meet Makayla

Childhood ArthritisAt the Arthritis Society, we believe that no child should have to live with arthritis, which robs them of their childhood.

The focus of this event is to highlight Stop Childhood Arthritis, a five-year fundraising initiative that will benefit the 24,000 children and their families that live with childhood arthritis – including those children that live right here in London-Middlesex.

In addition to funding a future without arthritis, the Arthritis Society supports community-based programs, such as expert therapy, family programming and fun-filled summer camp experiences for children with arthritis.

Meet Our Event Ambassador - Makayla Fox, 17, London

My name is Makayla Fox. I am 17 years old and I have Juvenile Arthritis (J.A.). During the summer of my grade 8 year, I developed pain in my knees and ankles. This pain was brushed off as ‘growing pains’ and I wouldn’t be diagnosed with Juvenile Arthritis for another 6 months. By the time I was referred to a pediatric rheumatologist, the J.A. had spread to my hands, toes, ankles, knees, hips, back, as well as inflammation in the wall of my chest. To be diagnosed, I had to go through many medical tests, including blood tests, physical exams, x-rays, MRIs, ultrasounds, and ECGs. When I found out I had Juvenile Arthritis, I was relieved. I was finally able to put a name to the chronic pain I was experiencing and have an idea of what was coming in the future for me. I did feel isolated after my diagnosis as I had never heard of Juvenile Arthritis before and didn’t know anyone else with the illness. I didn’t even know kids could get arthritis!
Going to high school with J.A. can be really difficult. Being at school is difficult due to pain and fatigue, and I often miss school and have to catch up on work. An additional challenge to attending high school is endless questions and stares from my peers that come with wearing knee braces. These questions can be annoying but are a good opportunity to raise awareness for Juvenile Arthritis.
I am very lucky to have the support of the Arthritis Society. I just participated in my third Walk for Arthritis and am looking forward to attending Camp Cambria again this August. Camp Cambria was an unforgettable experience where I was able to attend summer camp for the first time and do things I thought I wasn’t able to do since my diagnosis like water skiing, rock-climbing, and so much more. I also made close friends going through the same experiences in life, who still I keep in touch with. By sharing my story, I hope to raise awareness for Juvenile Arthritis.
