The Scientific Advisory Committee

The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) is a sub-committee of The Arthritis Society's National Board of Directors. The SAC's role is to advise The Arthritis Society on matters pertaining to arthritis science and research, specifically, but not exclusively –

  • National strategic priorities for arthritis science research
  • Planning and direction
  • New initiatives
  • Research and Career Development scientific program structure
  • Arthritis Society interface with other research funding agencies
  • Arthritis Society partnerships; e.g. Industry, Governments
  • Allocation of resources
  • Timely issues as they arise

Dr. Jason McDougall

Chair

Dr. McDougall is an Associate Professor in the departments of Pharmacology and Anaesthesia at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia. He holds a PhD from the Institute of Biological & Life Sciences, University of Glasgow, Scotland.

Dr. John Robert Matyas

Former Chair

Dr. John Robert Matyas, a native of Ithaca, NY received his Bachelor's of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1978 with a major in Biology.

Dr. John Antoniou

Scientific Advisory Committee Member

Dr. John Antoniou (MD, PhD, FRCSC) is an orthopaedic surgeon at the Jewish General Hospital who specializes in the evaluation and management of the entire gamut of shoulder, elbow and adult hip and knee reconstruction problems.

Dr. Jeff Dixon

Dr. Jeff Dixon is a Professor in the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology and Division of Oral Biology in the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry at The University of Western Ontario.

Dr. Brian Feldman

Scientific Advisory Committee Member / Chair, Medical Advisory Committee

Dr. Brian Feldman (MD, MSc, FRCPC) is a Professor of Pediatrics, Medicine, Health Policy, Management and Evaluation, and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

Ms. Susan Furlong

Scientific Advisory Committee Member - Newfoundland and Labrador Representative

Susan received her BSc in Biochemistry in 1983 before attending Memorial Medical School, receiving a Bachelor of Medical Science in 1985 and MD in 1987.

Dr. ​Monique Gignac

Monique Gignac is a Senior Scientist with the Division of Health Care and Outcomes Research at the Toronto Western Research Institute and an Associate Professor in the Dalla Lana School of Public Health at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Hubley-Kozey

Scientific Advisory Committee Member

Dr. Hubley-Kozey is a leader in clinical biomechanics and neuromuscular control and is trying to unravel the relationships that musculoskeletal disorders have on joint function and mobility as well as the effect that mobility and joint function have on bone and joint disorders.

Dr Sheila Laverty

​Dr Sheila Laverty is a Professor in the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Veterinary School at The University of Montreal.

Dr. Frank Beier
