Shaw Charity Classic Birdies for Kids

May 1, 2016

Birdies for kids - The Arthritis SocietyThe Shaw Charity Classic will again host some of the greatest names in golf at Calgary’s Canyon Meadows Golf & Country Club this summer, and we are thrilled to announce that The Arthritis Society has been selected as one the charitable partners for Birdies for Kids presented by AltaLink (BFK), a non-profit program run under the Calgary Shaw Charity Classic Foundation.

The Birdies for Kids program gives companies and individuals the opportunity to support The Arthritis Society, either through a one-time donation or based on the number of “birdies” made by the PGA Tour Champion players during the Shaw Charity Classic, which runs from August 31 - September 4, 2016.

For those unfamiliar with the sport, a “birdie” is a score of one stroke better than “par,” the number of strokes it should take an expert golfer to complete a hole. In 2013, the tournament’s inaugural year, players racked up an impressive 1,000 birdies; in 2014, that number was 892; and in 2015, 858.  Event organizers estimate 875 birdies will be made during the 2016 Shaw Charity Classic.

The Arthritis Society will receive 100% of every donation collected on our behalf and, through a tiered matching gift program from various corporate supporters, have the potential to receive up to 50% in extra funding.

Since its inception, the Shaw Charity Classic has generated over $8.5 million dollars for local charities, with children and youth being the primary benefactors. In 2015 alone, the event raised nearly $4 million – the single largest charitable contribution in PGA Tour Champions history – for distribution among 99 youth-based organizations across Alberta.

It is estimated that as many as 24,000 children and teens have arthritis (more than three out of every 1,000). Donations collected through the Birdies for Kids program for the Arthritis Society will fund programs and services designed to help those living with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) become better informed and connected, including our JIA Family Days, Family Match Program, the “I am Brave” elementary school presentation, and the Juvenile Arthritis Information Resource binder.
