March 5, 2015
Members of The Arthritis Society expressed sadness over the sudden passing of Dr. Cy Frank, a friend and a leader in arthritis research and clinical care.

Dr. Frank was nearing his second anniversary as CEO of Alberta Innovates – Health Solutions, and was one of the most respected orthopedic surgeons in the country. He was the first scientific director of CIHR's Institute of Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis and a key figure in the broader arthritis research community.

"We've lost one of the great pioneers of our cause," says Janet Yale, president and CEO, The Arthritis Society. "Cy was a collaborator, an innovator and a friend to all who had the opportunity to interact with him. We are all saddened by this loss and want to extend our deepest sympathies to his family." Dr. Frank received numerous awards throughout his career, including an appointment to the Order of Canada in 2014. He helped shape The Arthritis Society's research strategy that now dedicates over $4 million per year towards innovative projects seeking to find a cure and deliver improved treatment options.
