The Week Before

  • During your pre-operative visit, you’ll be told which medications should be stopped in the week before surgery. Follow this advice carefully. If you have any questions in the meantime, speak to your surgeon, your family doctor or your pharmacist.
  • Your doctor will recommend that you take antibiotics before and after the surgery to reduce the risk of infection.
  • This is a good time to go over your list of What to bring to the hospital and make sure you have everything you need. Be sure to pack and bring all your current medications to the hospital.
  • Remind family and friends that the date of your surgery is getting close so that they’ll be available to help you (see For Family and Friends).
  • Finally, keep your Care Team informed. Be sure they have up-to-date phone numbers for family members, friends and also for your family doctor.

ImportantIMPORTANT: If you get a cold or a fever during the week before surgery, or if your health changes in any way, tell your surgeon right away.
